Name the chord you're holding, and find other ways to play it.

Tap the frets your fingers are on and the page names the chord, along with any other names it goes by. Or type one (Am7, F♯m, B♭maj7) and it lists shapes up the neck; tap a shape to put it on the neck and hear it strummed. No microphone needed, so it works on the bus.

Tap a fret to hold it, tap it again to mute the string, tap left of the nut for an open string.

Type a chord

A minor seventh · A C E G

Standard tuning, 6 strings. Shapes keep the root in the bass and the fingers within three frets; the open ones come first.

How it names

The notes you hold are reduced to their pitch classes and compared with nineteen chord formulas from every possible root. A match with its root in the bass comes first; a match with another note in the bass is an inversion and is written with a slash. Shapes are found by search: every string open, muted or fretted within a three-fret span, keeping every chord tone, the root lowest and no muted string above a played one. The strum is the same synthesised string as the tuner’s.

What this page sends

Nothing leaves your browser. The page works out the chord from the frets you tap or the name you type, the strum is synthesised here too, nothing is stored, and no request goes to a server.
